Shellder (and its evolution, Cloyster) is one of the premier early to mid cost hyper carries in PokéRogue. Built around the combination of Skill Link, multi hit moves that deal insane samage, and Shell Smash, it tears through Classic mode bosses that are weak to ice especially Rayquaza, and Eternatus by breaking through health bars and triggering flinch/freeze/crit chances on every single strike.
Strengths
It is an INSANE boss shield breaker against Rayquaza and Eternatus. Has EXTREME physical bulk Has 5 hit garuntees allowing you to use items like kings rock and Grip Claw to both garuntee Flinch and steal items from pokemon.
Weaknesses
Has Fragile Special defense. Although its physical defense is insane, its special defense is something to be desired. Water/Ice is a very vulnerable typing against. Its bad against Electric, Grass, Fighting, and Rock, which are very common types. Shellder learns Shell Smash late unless an egg move is learned earlier on to help this.
Recommended build
Nature: Jolly to garuntee five hits or Adamant to boost physical Attack. We want to drop Special Attack. Active Ability: YOU WILL NEED THE MOST BROKEN ABILITY SKILL LINK. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE. Passive: Technician. Especially powering up Icicle Spear.
Moves & abilities
Shell Smash: taken at a later level, its to set up Cloyster for one of the Greatest Glass Cannons on Classic. Icicle Spear: Primary Physical Ice STAB. Hits 5 times at 25 BP each (boosted further by Technician). Liquidation / Water Shuriken: Liquidation for reliable single hit Water STAB and Defense drops. Water Shuriken (Egg Move) for priority multi hit Water coverage boosted by Skill Link and Technician. Rock Blast / Bone Rush: This is for Coverage. Rock Blast (TM/Level) for Fire/Ice coverage or Bone Rush (Egg Move) to hit Steel, Rock, and Electric switch ins super effectively.
Strategy
Setup Phase: Bring Cloyster in against a physical attacker or during a forced switch/recharge turn (e.g. after an opponent uses a recharge move like Hyper Beam or Eternabeam). Use Shell Smash once. Wave 200 (Eternatus): Do not lead with Cloyster. Pivot into a Special tank or Fairy/Steel type to bait an attack or force a recharge turn, switch Cloyster in, execute Shell Smash, and shred Eternatus's phase bars with Icicle Spear or Ground coverage.
Synergies
Special Walls / SpD Pivots: Blissey, Ting-Lu, or Clodsire to freely absorb the Electric, Grass, and Special Fire attacks aimed at Cloyster. Screens / Redirection Support: Dual Screen users (Grimmsnarl, Klefki) reduce incoming Special damage to make setup turns completely safe.
Tips for beginners
Pick Setup Turns Carefully: Never click Shell Smash against unknown Special attackers or high speed Electric/Grass Pokémon without a Focus Sash. Stock King’s Rocks Early: As soon as King's Rocks appear in the shop, feed them to Shellder. Skill Link's 5 guaranteed hits provide rolling flinch checks that bail you out of bad matchups.
Tips for advanced players
Stack Technician + Multi Lens: Unlocking Cloyster's passive Technician paired with 1–2 Multi Lens items turns Icicle Spear into an engine that hits 10 to 15 times, triggering Grip Claw item theft across an entire enemy inventory in one turn. Sash Exploitation: Equipping a Focus Sash intentionally allows Cloyster to take a fatal Special attack during a Shell Smash turn, dropping it to 1 HP while at +2 Speed and +2 Attack, ready to trigger Pinch Berries (Liechi/Salac) for an extra boost.
